BIOGRAPHY TRU TRU began in 1994 as "The Men" in Camden, New Jersey, their hometown. The classy, elegant and very well dressed group consist of three members, James "Jimi" Williams, Primo Wansley (the two original members) and LaVon "Donnie" Tatem who joined the others in 2008. The group has quietly been building a strong fan base while sharing the stage with such notables as Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, the late Teddy Pendergrass, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Dennis Edwards and the Temptations and most recently, Chaka Khan. The distinct and melodic voices of TRU can be heard as background singers for Hall and Oates, Barbara Mason, Jean Carne and Bruce Springsteen, just to name a few. They have toured around the world and worked exclusively in Atlantic City and Las Vegas, Nevada. James "Jimi" Williams, the group leader of TRU, has an extensive musical background which includes singing with "The Ebonys" of Camden (You're The Reason Why) and replacing one of the original members of "The Elgins" (Heaven Must Have Sent You, Darling Baby) who recorded on the famous Motown label. Jimi sings first and second tenor, and lead vocals. Primo Wansley sings second tenor and lead vocals, he also sang with Jimi in "The Elgins". Additionally, Primo and Donnie performed together in the gospel group "The Stars Of Harmony". LaVon "Donnie" Tatem's first love is gospel music and he has performed around the country as a solo gospel artist. He has opened for many legendary gospel artist. Donnie also performed as a drummer in the jazz group "Jazz Eternity" and is a songwriter. Donnie sings baritone and lead vocals. TRU stands for: TALENTED, RELIGIOUS AND UNIQUE.
